Some designer radiators have been reported to make bubbling, clanging or banging noises when heating. This could be caused by the liquid level in the radiator, the type of liquid in the radiator or the element. Here’s a quick rundown of some of the reasons your radiator might be making noise:
1. Radiator installation: Some noises can be caused by the installation of the radiator brackets. It is worth checking: are the brackets level? Have they been under-tightened or overtightened?
2. Fluid levels: Has any fluid been lost or spilt during installation of the element? If yes, has the radiator been refilled? The loss of fluid without replacement may cause the volume of fluid in the radiator to be too low, causing bad circulation. In this case, hot liquid can collect near the element, overheat, and reach temperatures closer to boiling point, which may result in bubbling noises. If the lost fluid has been replaced, find out what type of replacement fluid was used. If an inappropriate replacement was used (e.g. water), causing similar issues of bubbling as the fluid overheats.
3. The element: Which element is being used with the designer radiator? If it’s the MOA Blue heating element, check the sensor rod is orientated correctly (beneath the heating rod) and that the sensor rod is straight. See attached.
